I to change our Concert Choir Tour. Instead of going to Cincinnati, Concert Choir will tour to Columbus, OH March 18-19, 2016. This is an optional tour. Information, itinerary and pricing will be sent home sometime in October.

Concert choir, please remember our Veterans Day Performance in school, Wednesday, November 11th!

A Capella Auditions Update

Due to the overwhelming response from students, I’m adding two extra audition days for the A Capella Ensemble. Any student in 7-8th grade is eligible to audition. The audition dates are Monday, August 31, Tuesday September 1st, Thursday September 3rd and Friday September 4th. All in 6 minute audition slots from 3:15-5:30 p.m. There are a few students who have asked to go right after school due to sports etc. That is fine but please write your name above the first time slot and say “right after school” so I will be ready for you.

The auditions are very simple. Students will sing up and down through their vocal range, complete a quick sight reading exercise, sing back little melodies I play on the piano, and will prepare a short song to sing if students wish to. This song can be something simple as happy birthday. If you are interested in learning more about the A Capella Ensemble, take a look at the description in the handbook and watch some of their video’s on the website’s media page.

Welcome Back!

Hi everyone,

I hope all of you have had wonderful and relaxing summers. I did! I had the pleasure of spending two weeks of my summer singing with the Westminster Choir College Summer Chamber Choir. We performed in New York City and in Princeton, NJ. I also spent time visiting family, vacationing in Marblehead, and logging miles on my bike in the metro parks!

I am looking forward to an awesome year at Learwood. Some things to highlight the year, our baby grand piano was refurbished over the summer! As we rehearse during the day, we get to rehearse now with what I consider a brand new instrument. Our 8th grade choirs this year will have the pleasure of working with composer Phillip Silvey as he is commissioning a brand new piece dedicated to Learwood Middle School. More details about this piece to come! We are also in the works for a Concert Choir to tour to Cincinnati, OH sometime in the spring. Again, details to come.

Please use this website as a resource for all of you during the year. To the right is the running calendar. This will be kept up to date and will always have the correct locations etc. The home page acts as a running blog where you will receive email notifications every time I post! Speaking of posting…I will be posting your first assignment soon!

I can’t wait to make music with all of you!

Concert This Thursday! Entitled, “A Great Journey”

I am proud to announce our concert theme this Thursday is entitled “A Great Journey!” I chose this theme for many reasons. At the concert, you will witness music from many different countries or cultures. Many of the pieces reflect on the theme of a journey or longing such as “Walk in Jerusalem” “We Rise Again” “That Lonesome Road” “Famine Song” and “See You Again.” Personally I am naming this concert “A Great Journey” because this is my first class of 8th graders I have had since they were 7th graders at Learwood Middle School.

Students are to report to the High School PAC at 6:45 this Thursday, May 21st. They are to wear their black and white. Students will know what rooms they need to report to. The concert will start at 7:30 p.m.

This is a change this concert. We are asking after the concert that 7th grade students meet their family in the HS Commons. The 8th grade students will meet their parents in the PAC. This should help alleviate some of the crowded space after the concert in the PAC.

Our students have worked very hard for this concert. I am looking forward to an evening of amazing music making!

8th Grade! Don’t forget your rehearsal tomorrow night at the HS PAC! 7:00-7:30 p.m. for the 8th grade mixed choir. Concert Choir will stay until 8:00 p.m.

Concert Choir Tours to Pittsburgh!

What an amazing experience it has been for our concert choir to tour to Pittsburgh! We started our tour by heading to my Alma Mater, Beaver Area Middle School/High School where we had a great workshop with both choirs. Our choirs sang together, got to meet one another, we played meet and greet games, we learned how to improvise/harmonize, and sang for each other.
Then we headed into Downtown Pittsburgh and saw breath taking views of the city from Mt. Washington riding the Duquesne Incline. We ate at the Hard Rock Cafe and enjoyed an amazing concert with the Pittsburgh Symphony at Heinz Hall. Tomorrow we have a fun day in Kennywood before heading home.

I will write another post tomorrow 🙂

Congratulations to the Learwood 7th Grade Women and the 8th Grade Concert Choir for receiving straight Superior Ratings in Class A at their adjudication last night. Both ensembles performed with great artistry and represented Learwood with their best behavior and character! Bravo!

Important Upcoming Concerts/Events Announcements

Dear Students and Parents,

I hope all of you are well and are enjoying this beautiful weather! I am looking forward to a wonderful month filled with music from our choirs! All of our students have been working very hard and you will see their great work at their adjudications if going and their concert. Below are all of the dates that I have sent out before to you. Remember, we had to change the Spring Choir Concert to Thursday, May 21st. THE CONCERT IS NOT TOMORROW, TUESDAY, MAY 5TH! Below are all of the dates from now until the end of the year. PLEASE double check your calendars for these dates. You should have also received a note from Mr. Nuggud in regards to a wrong date for the choir concert he put in his newsletter.

Friday May 15-Saturday May 16th: Concert Choir Tour to Pittsburgh. Students report to the choir room at 7:30 a.m.

Wednesday, May 20th 7:00-8:00 p.m. 8th Grade choirs rehearsal, ALHS PAC (Concert choir stays the full hour. 8th grade mixed choir members stays until 7:30 p.m.)

Thursday, May 21st Spring Choir Concert 7:30 p.m. Students report at 6:45 p.m. ALL CHOIRS.

The 8th grade mixed choir will NOT be singing at the Lake Erie Crushers Game.

For the spring concert, we are trying something new to help alleviate traffic after the concert. We will ask after the concert for any 7th grade students/parents to meet each other in the high school commons. We will keep the 8th grade students/parents in the PAC. This way, the PAC does not get too packed afterwards. For those who have 7th and 8th grade students, you will meet your students in the PAC. 7th grade parents, I would suggest parking near the commons and entering from that side of the building that evening.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Thank you!!!!

Yours in song,

Mr. Pontoli
